After the latest Digital Photo Professional update (DPP 3.4.1.1) revealed some evidence about an upcoming Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D, Canon finally introduced this new entry-level DSLR this month. The EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D/Kiss F (full product specifications) is technically a hybrid between hardware and features found in Canon’s entry-level cameras from the past: the 7-point autofocus system comes from the XT/350D, the Digic III processor is the same as in the XSi/450D and the Live View feature is implemented with the same features as found in the XSi/450D.

With this DSLR Canon seems to open up a new class in their EOS system which is somehow below the former entry level cameras (XT/350D, XTi/400D) and the latest entry-level XSi/450D. It’s priced 200$ below Canons current or former entry-level DSLR XSi/450D and you can find a nice first review of this new DSLR over at Digital Photography Review.

Canon also introduced the new midrange Speedlite 430EX II, replacing the 430EX flash unit. This new Speedlite is now fully configurable with the Camera’s LCD menu and it got now a metal shoe. According to Canon the 430EX II also boasts 20% faster recycling times and is more silent while doing this. In Europe and in the USA the Speedlite should be available from the end of July.

The All-in-one Aperture adjustment plugin bundle from Human Software is now called Edit for Aperture or just Edit. The new version 1.2 can now apply multiple layers of curves correction at once and the interface gets a new split image view. Also “different compatibility issues for PowerPC users” were fixed according to the release notes.

The ApertureEdit plug-in is a bundle of 12 different modules for denoising, lens fixing, framing, light effects and many more. All effects can be applied to one image at a time or to a whole set of images at once and according to Human Software Edit offers more than 4000 professional effects. Just head over to the product page to see all effects and features this plugin bundle is capable of.

The whole bundle is priced at US$ 299.95 and it’s available from Human Software’s Online Shop. Or you can buy just one single plug-in too which will cost you US$ 69.95 for each. There’s a trial version available too and if you don’t want to mail Human Software for the trial version you can download it from MacUpdate.

For quite some time I use my Ubuntu machine as a file and backup server for all Macs in my network which is perfectly accessible from the Finder in Mac OS X. There are some instructions available in the web for this task but all failed in my case so I wrote my own tutorial with all the steps needed for it to work properly.

So here’s my little Tutorial for connecting Mac OS X Leopard with Ubuntu and using your Ubuntu machine as a backup volume for Time Machine but all steps can be reproduced on every Linux box and they work with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger too. At the end of this tutorial you will have a server which shows up in the Finder sidebar and behaves just like a Mac server when accessing it from your Macs. To be perfectly integrated with Mac OS X we’re going to use Apple’s Filing Protocol (AFP) for network and file sharing.

Although this Tutorial involves using the Terminal in Ubuntu and looks a bit geeky it’s very easy even for beginners. I have tried to explain all steps and Terminal commands so you may learn a bit about the Terminal too. At the end of the article you can download my Server Displays icon pack quickly made by me with custom icons for a Mac, Ubuntu and Windows server.

Finally it’s here: Mozilla released the new Firefox 3 browser today while trying to set a Guinness World Record for the most downloaded software in 24 hours.

Have you ever looked for a way to quickly add text to your images without photoshopping a watermark image first?

There’s a simple editing plug-in available for this task called Borders & Titles and as the name says you can add simple borders and text to your images within Aperture 2.1. It’s a sample plug-in provided by Apple and it’s fully functional. You can download it from Apple’s Developer Connection website without registration:

The downlaod package includes the source code too so you can adjust the plug-in if you’re able to code Cocoa. After downloading put the BordersAndTitles.ApertureEdit plug-in into /Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins and access the plug-in from Aperture.

Apple released a developer preview of the upcoming version of its web browser Safari to registered Developers. The Safari 4 Developer Preview is available for Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard and Windows. While the main changes are not visible to the user the most significant visible new feature is the overhauled Web Inspector.

These two desktop icons show the Camera Obscura as it was used by Nicéphore Niépce in an Aperture and iPhoto style and are intended as an homage to him. Nicéphore Niépce made it first possible to preserve an image taken with a camera obscura in 1826 or 1827 by using a special mixture of bitumen on a pewter plate, naming it Heliography. This first preserved photograph “View from the Window at Le Gras” is the one you can see in the iPhoto icon contained in this package. The third icon is the folder icon I have created for this icon package.

In addition to my Niépce’s Camera Obscura icons for Aperture and iPhoto I have made some Wallpapers containing both icons. All Wallpapers using a custom designed background which imitates the look of a metal plate like it was used in Niépce’s experiments although it wasn’t golden To make it more Mac style I have added a stenciled dots pattern (which is a commonly used reference to the front design of the MacPro). Here are the details:

• Aperture and iPhoto styled Camera Obscura as it was used by Nicéphore Niépce.
• Including one desktop version with the Aperture styled Camera Obscura and one with the iPhoto styled. Both come in 1920×1200 for widescreen displays and 1600×1200 for normal displays
• Including 2 different crops for the iPhone (480×320).

In a heavy venturesome step of unreasonable Web 2.0 love I’ve decided to get me on Twitter and opened up an account.

If you like, you can follow me now on Twitter while I try to find some advantages of this curious Twitter thing. The plan for now is to post about background updates of this website and about whatever I will throw into the Cloud on other places. But damn, just 140 characters. Feels like writing like it’s 1999.

I have added my first wallpaper to the Goodies section on this website. It’s a shot of blooming chives which was altered with Aperture 2.1 and Photoshop CS3.

You can get the wallpaper by browsing my Goodies section and clicking on the download link for the wallpaper. The download package also includes a custom folder icon (512px as .icns, .png, .ico) with the Chives wallpaper on it.

Beside that, this image is available for print on deviantArt in various sizes.
